Engagement Ring Buying Guide
Engagement Ring Buying Guide
Buying an engagement ring feels overwhelming at first. This guide breaks the process into clear steps, so you walk into your consultation with confidence.
Step 1: Set Your Budget First
Decide your budget before you look at a single ring. This keeps your options focused and saves you time.
A custom ring at Rings of Melbourne typically starts at $3000. Your final price depends on the diamond size, metal type, and design complexity.
We work within your budget. We never pressure you to spend more than you planned.
Step 2: Choose Your Diamond Shape
Each diamond shape gives a different look and feel.
Round brilliant: The most popular shape. It reflects the most light and gives the strongest sparkle.
Oval: A longer shape that can make the finger look longer. Popular for its balance of size and sparkle.
Cushion: A soft, pillow shaped cut with rounded corners. Gives a vintage feel.
Emerald: A rectangular cut with clean lines. Shows off diamond clarity more than sparkle.
Pear: A teardrop shape. Works well as a solitaire or in a halo setting.
Marquise: A narrow, pointed oval. Makes the finger appear slimmer.
Step 3: Understand the 4Cs
Jewellers grade diamonds on four factors.
Cut: How well the diamond is shaped and faceted. Cut affects sparkle more than any other factor.
Colour: Graded from D (colourless) to Z (visible yellow tint). Most engagement rings use colours between D and J.
Clarity: Measures internal flaws. Most flaws are invisible to the naked eye at VS1 or VS2 grade.
Carat: The diamond’s weight, not its size. Two diamonds with the same carat weight can look different sizes depending on the cut.
Ask your jeweller to show you diamonds side by side. Seeing the differences in person helps you understand what actually matters for your ring.
Step 4: Pick Your Metal
White gold: Bright white finish. Requires re-plating every one to two years to keep its colour.
Yellow gold: A classic, warm tone. Naturally durable and needs less maintenance than white gold.
Rose gold: A pink toned gold, popular for vintage and modern designs alike.
Platinum: The most durable metal option. Naturally white and does not need re-plating. Costs more than gold.
Step 5: Decide on a Setting
Solitaire: A single diamond on a plain band. Timeless and simple.
Halo: A center diamond surrounded by smaller diamonds. Makes the center stone look larger.
Trilogy: Three diamonds in a row, often symbolizing your past, present, and future together.
Side stone: Smaller diamonds set along the band next to the center stone.
Step 6: Get the Ring Size Right
Never guess a ring size. A ring that doesn’t fit needs resizing, which takes time and adds cost.
The most accurate way to find a ring size is an in-person measurement with a jeweller. If you’re planning a surprise proposal, borrow a ring your partner already wears on the correct finger and bring it to your consultation. We measure it for you, no questions asked.
Step 7: Ask About Certification
Every diamond over 0.30 carats should come with an independent certificate from a lab such as GIA or IGI. This certificate confirms the diamond’s cut, colour, clarity, and carat weight. Always ask for certification before you buy.
Step 8: Book Your Consultation
At Rings of Melbourne, your consultation is complimentary. You sit down with Andrew directly, choose your diamond, and design your ring in the same studio where it gets made.
